Practice drill on arabic adjectives

بِسمِ اللهِ الرَّحمانِ الرَّحِيم

الحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على نبينا محمد وآله وصحبه

الدرس الثامن عشر

السلام عليكم ورَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وبَركاتُه,  In the previous chapter alhamdulillah we studied about relative pronouns and also lot of practice with adjectives.  Can you iterate the relative pronoun table ? Al-Ladhī, Al-ladhāni, ……….
Relative pronouns are very common in quran. If you don’t master it then you will miss most of quran understanding.
Lets see if you can translate below relative sentences examples from quran. If you can’t then please go back to the previous chapter and memorize it again.

73:20
مِنَ الَّذِينَ مَعَكَ
4:136
الْكِتَابِ الَّذِي نَزَّلَ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِهِ
2:40
نِعْمَتِيَ الَّتِي أَنْعَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ
67:1
تَبَارَكَ الَّذِي بِيَدِهِ الْمُلْكُ

Insha-allah in this chapter we will try to learn more vocabulary and practice more.

Arabic version of “To have / has / with”
Arabic does not use a verb to express the meaning of english ‘have / has’.  Instead a number of prepositions are used.  (ل )( عند  for )( with  مع)

           example:
Mohammad has a new car.
لِمحمدٍ سيارةٍ جديدةٍ
Abidah has old cycle
عند عبيدةِ درّاجةٍ القديمةٍ
The pen is with my sister
القلم مع أختي

Arabic version of “May i have
In arabic to request to someone to have something.  (مُمْكِنْ - possible )
 example:

May i have my book please
مُمْكِنْ  كتابي من فضلك ؟

Arabic version of “ i would like to / i want”   : (أُرِيدُ)

I want pizza
أريد بيتزا

The above words are very frequently used in our daily vocabulary. So learning them and practicing them will be very helpful insha-allah.  So lets do it.

See what all ahmed’s family has.

Ahmed :  new fast car
Fatima :  expensive Gold chain

Umar : Old cheap bicycle
Hajira :  Big green bag

Practice drill.   Below are sentences made from 4 words “Ahmed / new / fast / car”.  You can try to fill the empty box in the table

He is ahmed

Ahmed has a new fast car
لِأحمدٍ سيارة جديدةٍ سريعةٍ
His car is fast and new
سيارتهُ بسرعةٍ وجديدةٍ
Ahmed’s new fast car
سيارةُ أحمدِ سريعةٍ جديدةٍ
Does he have a new car ?
هل عِندَهُ سيارةٍ جديدةٍ ؟
May i have your car please
ممكن سيارتك من فضلك  ؟
I would like to have your car
أريد سيارتك
Here you have
تَفضّل
thanks
شكرا

Notice how many ways we can make sentence with just few words. Now do the same for the rest of the family members.

Fatima / expensive / Gold / chain

She is fatimah

Fatimah has golden necklace
لِفاطمة قلادة من الذهب
her necklace is golden and expensive
قلادةها من ذهب وغلِيةٍ
Fatimah’s expensive golden necklace

Does she have a necklace ?

May i have your necklace please

I would like to have your necklace

Here you have

thanks

Try for : 1.  “Hajira / Big / green / bag”
             2.  Umar / Old / cheap / bicycle

Lot of arabic grammar ?  Please don’t give up.  Insha-allah Practice makes man perfect.  So keep practicing and keep reading more arabic.

If you don’t stand up for something, you’ll fall for anything.

Arabic Idafa - possessive format

                                                                بِسمِ اللهِ الرَّحمانِ الرَّحِيم

الحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على نبينا محمد وآله وصحبه

الدرس السادس عشر

لا إله إلا الله محمد  رَسُولُ اللّهِ

السلام عليكم ورَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وبَركاتُه ,  I am sure you should know the meaning of above. And every muslim must say  “اشْهَدُ اَنْ  لا إله إلا الله محمد  رَسُولُ اللّهِ” .  meaning i bear witness that, there is no God but Allah (swt) and Muhammad ﷺ is messenger of Allah.  Are you able to spot the verb that sentence ? “شهد” .   Is that in present tense / past tense ? What’s the past tense equivalent of that ?

Who is Muhammad ﷺ  ?
        رَسُولُ اللّهِ
If you notice there are 2 nouns in this. [ رَسُولٌ -  messenger ] & [ اللّهُ - Allah ].  But joining them makes it idafa format as in english "The... of the....." possessive format also called (owner - owned).

The format of idafa is always [إسْمُ  إسْمِ]   or [إسْمُ  إسْمٍ].
example:
رَسُولُ اللّهِ     -  Messenger of Allah
بابُ الْبيتِ     - the door of the house
كتابُ ابنِهِ      - the book of his son
كتابُ محمّدٍ  - the book of Muhammad

The mudaf - (owner) takes neither the definite nor the indefinite.  These 2 are wrong .
كِتابٌ بِلالٍ
الكِتابُ بلالٍ

Asking questions   whose is it / whose is he/she ?”

example 1:  whose book is this ?  لِمن هذا الكِتابُ ؟
Bilal’s book / (book of bilal)   :  كِتابُ بلِالٍ

example 2:  whose son is he ?  إبْنُ مَنْ هُو؟
He is umar’s son. هو إبْنُ عمرِ

Exercise :

Remember the family tree exercise we did in chapter 2.
Ahmed : father                 fatima : mother
umar     : son                   hajira    :  daughter
You know the relationship of each one to each other. complete the following as given in example.

Q. Whose one is he ?  إبْنُ مَنْ هُو؟
A. Umar, he is Ahmed’s son.  عُمر،هو إبن أحمدِ
Q. Whose daughter is she ? ………………..
A. ……………………… , حاجرة
Q. زوجٌ  مَن هو؟
A. Ahmed ………….
Q. whose sister is she ?
A. ……………………… , حاجرة
Q. whose wife is she ?
A.……………………… فاطمة
Q. And umar ?
A. Umar, he is Hajira’s brother

Exercise : Please try to translate these examples from quran for Idafa:
  1. فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ
  2. بَنَاتُ الْأَخِ وَبَنَاتُ الْأُخْتِ
  3. أَرْضُ اللَّهِ وَاسِعَةً
  4. فَأُولَٰئِكَ أَصْحَابُ النَّارِ
  5. آيَاتُ الرَّحْمَٰنِ
